If you thought there were a lot of upsets to start the 2016 season, you didn't see anything compared to this weekend in NCAA gymnastics. No. 4 Alabama went down to No. 8 Auburn when the Tigers broke a 117-meet streak spanning 37 years. No. 5 LSU also lost to No. 11 Georgia. Rutgers picked up its first Big 10 win over Maryland and Iowa continued its success, beating Illinois. Minnesota remained undefeated, picking up a win over Nebraska, and Kentucky earned its first conference win of the season over Missouri. and beam to put together an overall solid performance for its season-high in 2016.
Alabama didn't do bad by any means, but the little mistakes added up and the Crimson Tide didn't look as sharp as they normally do. Head coach Dana Duckworth continued to play around with lineups, which could have contributed to the loss. With two major upsets over Alabama this season, it may be time to start solidifying the top six on each event.
But on vault, the fans were treated to a show with both Georgia’s Brittany regress and Gnat competing double-twisting Yurchenkos. They were the first of their kind to ever be performed in Stegeman Coliseum. Gymdogs senior had herself a night, which led to the Georgia win. Jay had a trio of 9.925s as well as a career-high 9.9 beam.
close to the top all around score with a 39.55 with a 9.9 on beam and 9.925 on floor. It was the Huskies highest score of the season and second 196 so far.
exciting gymnastics from both sides of the competition floor. Risa Perez got cheers for her personality-filled and energetic floor piece and Kaytianna McMillan’s floor back spin and beam one-armed front handspring to knee produced audible gasps. McMillan also scored a 9.925 on bars to start her great night. Danusia Francis also had herself a night, competing vault for the first time ever in college and winning the all around in the process.
visibly rattled, tears falling from her eyes. At first it appeared as if she would get a redo because of an equipment malfunction, but that was later dismissed, leaving fans and the team alike frustrated. But on the bright side, Stanford’s Elizabeth Price won yet another all around title and swept the individual events as well. Ivana Hong bounced back from her beam fall with a hit routine, and Haley Spector picked up a 9.925 on floor. Arizona’s Jessie Sisler, the 2015 Pac-12 co-floor champion had a 9.9 for herself on floor, and the Wildcats finished with a strong 196.150, hitting 24-for-24 routines despite the controversial ending.
Waltz was finally back from an ACL tear, and the Wildcats looked more put together than in past competitions.
