The Mount: Week 8

2/28/2016

There are a lot of great matchups this weekend. LSU travels to Florida, and fans may get their first chance to see Alex McMurtry make her college debut on floor. The big Alabama-Georgia rivalry also shapes up Friday night and Michigan will try to bounce back from being upset at Southern Utah in a top 4 matchup with Oklahoma. There’s a lot of good gymnastics this weekend, and you don’t want to miss one bit.

As always, we’ll tell you who we think will win these top meets, give previews of other notable matchups and provide scoring and video links for every competition happening between Friday and Monday. And once again, we’re welcoming Casey to the pick em panel! But we don’t want to be the only ones with opinions. We want to hear your opinions too! So play along by answering who you think will win each matchup by participating in the polls. And if you feel strongly about your choices, feel free to let us know in the comments below. The records from last week’s college pick em are as follows: Casey (2-2), Elizabeth (3-1), fan vote (3-1).

LSU Preview | Florida Preview
Florida has been good but not perfect this season. LSU has had issues here and there but really turned it up and showed its a team to watch out for last weekend against Auburn. LSU has the edge on vault, simply because of difficulty. However, if Bridget Sloan finally throws the Yurchenko one and a half (what are you waiting for?!), the Gators could bring it closer to even. Likewise, Florida has the advantage on bars, with stronger routines with higher scoring potential. LSU has been less consistent with almost everyone in the usual lineup falling at least once this season. Beam could go either way. When the Tigers hit, they are great (and not to mention beautiful!), but Jenny Rowland is a beam coach extraordinaire, so you can bet Florida will hit when it counts. In a neutral-site meet, floor would certainly go to LSU. Florida doesn’t have the depth and the first couple of routines aren’t as strong as LSU’s. However, with Florida at home, literally anything could happen. We honestly wouldn’t be surprised with six perfect 10s… And now with the rumor that Alex McMurtry might make her collegiate debut on the event, things get even more interesting.

Team Poster Rankings

2/25/2016

Kids (and adults, to be honest) love to get their favorite team’s poster and put it up on their wall at home. Every year, we anticipate what each school with come up with next. This year, we collected as many team posters as we could find and judged our favorites. Which team had the most creative design in 2016? Read on to find out and let us know your favorite poster in the comments or on Twitter!

Our criteria is quite similar to that of our leotard rankings. The posters are judges on creativity, execution of the idea (for example, how well did Georgia edit and design its water concept), school spirit and representation of the team (were just the seniors or star gymnasts featured or the entire team).
Georgia
Score: 8.7
Casey
Creativity: 2.8/3
Execution of idea: 2.8/3
School Spirit: 1.4/2
Representation of Team: 1.8/2
Total: 8.8/10

This shoot is awesome! Came out great. Love it all.

Elizabeth
Creativity: 2.8/3
Execution of idea: 2.5/3
School Spirit: 1.5/2
Representation of Team: 1.8/2
Total: 8.6/10

I loved this shoot when I saw it on Twitter. I just wish they’d done something a little more creative with the execution on the actual poster (although the calendar does highlight more of the water pictures). I also wish the shots had the girls’ names under.

Leotard Rankings: Week 7

2/24/2016

This week truly defined the good, the bad and the ugly. There were some gorgeous leotards but also some on the very opposite end of the spectrum. But don’t worry, we break it all down for you. The criteria remains the same though: up to three points for design; two points for fabric, sparkle, etc.; and two points for school spirit; three points for overall appearance. We want to know what you thought too (or if we forgot one of your favorites from this weekend)! Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter.
Stanford
Score: 9.2
Casey
Design: 2.8/3
Fabric/Sparkle: 2/2
School Spirit: 1.5/2
Overall Appearance: 2.9/3
Total: 9.2/10

I AM OBSESSED.  This is the best leo Stanford has ever worn. It looked great on the girls.  The white popped on the dark color scheme to highlight the classy neckline and details.  The red fabric was basically a red overlaid with a black mesh to create the super pretty and deep red color.

Elizabeth
Design: 2.8/3
Fabric/Sparkle: 1.8/2
School Spirit: 1.7/2
Overall Appearance: 2.9/3
Total: 9.2/10

I loooooove this Stanford leo. It’s so different that the Cardinal normally does. it’s so pretty. The deep red looks great and especially with the rhinestones on top. The white really pops on the darker red and black. This is a total win for Stanford.
