Things were right in the universe after week two of NCAA gymnastics. Georgia was out of the 193 dumps after a what we can only imagine was a stern talking to by Suzanne Yoculan, Stanford was still all over the place and we had just enough balance beam situations to feel like everything’s right with the world. But the worst thing to come out of the weekend was the unfortunate injury to Arkansas senior Amanda Wellick, who went down in warmups and did not compete. But that’s not all that happened as over 30 meets took place between Wednesday and Monday. So catch up on everything you might have missed.
last rotation, things actually got interesting after beam stalwart Sydney Ewing fell on her tumbling series. But a strong performance from Ashleigh Gnat in the anchor spot (as fell as an imperfect perfect 10 earlier in the meet on vault) allowed the fall to be erased and LSU to take the W back to Baton Rouge. Apart from Gnat’s 10, the first of its kind in 2017, junior Myia Hambrick also had herself a day, winning floor with a 9.95, tying for the all around with a 39.600 with Alabama’s Kiana Winston and notching a strong 9.925 on vault for her full-twisting Yurchenko. Winston also won an individual event, claiming the bars title with a 9.95. Despite the loss, the Crimson Tide didn’t look far off from polished, still managing to post over a 197 for the effort in just the second meet of the new season.
the first to score the high mark this 2017 season. Freshman phenom Maggie Nichols continued to impress, sharing or out-right winning four of the five individual event titles, including the all around where she posted the highest four-event total in the country thus far. Capps also had herself a day, winning vault and beam, the latter which she did with a near-perfect 9.975. UCLA also had an impressive showing, totaling its highest team score of the season and nabbing some event wins as well — Peng-Peng Lee and Kyla Ross tied Nichols and Nicole Lehrmann for the bars title. While Oklahoma still showed room for improvement despite the high score, the Bruins showed they had more room to grow, counting a 9.475 on floor after both Stella Savvidou and Pua Hall both had mishaps.
tallied its highest team total in program history with a 196.950, backed by stellar newcomer Mollie Korth, who tied for the all-around title with Florida’s Kennedy Baker with a 39.575, also winning floor with a 9.925 and finishing second on beam. The WIldcats also got support from sophomores Sidney Dukes and Alex Hyland who each notched a score of 9.9 or higher to contribute to the history-making performance. For the Gators, it was business as usual. Alex McMurtry earned a 9.95 on bars and 9.925 on vault while junior transfer Rachel Slocum, who only competed in exhibition in week one, posted a 9.95 to win the vault title in her first competitive routine for Florida.
a 193.950 total. On the other hand, backed by the return of Morgan Porter from suspension, Missouri continued its strong start to 197, posting a 195.850 and sweeping all but one event title. Porter won the all around (39.175), bars (9.825) and floor (9.875) while Britney Ward claimed the vault title with a 9.925.
while Britney Ward won beam and Kennedi Harris won floor. Lindenwood also showed improvement from its first meet, upping its team total to a 193 on its quest to defend the national title it won in 2016.
Maddie Karr continued her stellar freshman campaign, winning the all around and beam with Nina McGee-level scores. Nikole Addison also showed she’s a viable replacement for McGee, scoring a high 9.925 on floor. And, slightly under the radar freshman Sam Ogden, a product of WOGA, also continued to quietly impress, winning bars with a 9.875.
having to count another fall on beam did the Beavers in and made them settle for just a mediocre 194.525. However, a slow start is to be expected with nine freshmen as well as others returning from injury. SPU had bright spots here and there as well, despite the loss and lower score. Freshman Darian Burns competed all four events in her collegiate debut, tallying a 9.725 on vault and 9.775 on beam for her efforts — each score was the team’s high on the event.
country after two weeks of action. Jillian Winstanley and Alexandra Zois led the team with 9.9s while Lix Pfeiler and Sara Mermelstein backed it up with a pair of 9.875s. Cami Drouin-Allaire and Chelsea Raineri also won vault. The remaining teams put on a show as well, with University of Pennsylvania defeating North Carolina to place second overall. However, it wasn’t a complete loss for UNC despite the struggles on beam and floor as Morgan Lane picked up the win on floor and in the all around.
