The NCAA gymnastics season is ALMOST HERE! And with technology allowing fans to be more connected than ever before, we decided to help out those of you still a bit behind on the times. If you call yourself a gym fan, you’ll want to follow these social media accounts in 2016.
In case you were living in a hole during the fall and missed all the great things happening on social media, we’ve got you covered with our inaugural social media awards! You can’t go into the 2016 season without first seeing these posts.
Instagram Caption of the Year
Writing Instagram captions has become an art. Yes, we know you are excited for the season that starts in a carefully calculated number of days and you just can't wait to put on that [insert team name] leotard again. But there's more creativity out there than that. Here are a couple of our favorites.
At first glimpse Talia Chiarelli's classic Instagram post after team picture day appears to be like the thousands of others from college gymnasts nationwide. But then there's the caption. Not one component takes it to the next level, but the sum of the parts — from the first words to the final hashtag — are sure to spark at least a smile. Like Chiarelli, Brittany Rogers frequently sets herself apart in the world of Instagram captions. Not only did she post a nice standing Arabian accompanied by some interesting dance moves, but she also tied it all nicely to the news of Morgan Reynolds' recovery from an illness making it both timely and heartfelt.
Michigan was voted the team to beat in the Big 10's preseason coaches poll. The Wolverines finished first in the conference in 2015. Nebraska finished second in preseason votes followed by Illinois, Penn State, Ohio State, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan State, Maryland and Rutgers.
The conference also selected gymnasts to watch for the 2016 season. On the list are six first-team All-Big 10 honorees from last season: Gianna O'Connor (Illinois), Nicole Artz (Michigan), Lisa Burt (Michigan State), Elena Lagoski (Michigan State), Lindsay Mable (Minnesota) and Hollie Blanske (Nebraska). Also on the list are Ashley Lambert (Nebraska) and Briannah Tsang (Penn State) who received second-team honors. Mable was also the Big 10 Gymnast of the Year in 2015 and Tsang was freshman of the year. Rounding out the watch list are Mollie Drenth (Iowa), Angel Metcalf (Iowa), Abbie Epperson (Maryland), Kathy Tang (Maryland), Ciara Gardner (Minnesota), Taylor Harrison (Ohio State), Kiera Brown (Penn State), April Baker (Rutgers) and Elizabeth Groden (Rutgers). Lizzy LeDuc (Illinois), Olivia Karas (Michigan) and Kaitlyn Hofland (Ohio St) made the list as newcomers.
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store."
"Maybe Christmas... Perhaps... Means a little bit more." — Dr. Seuss
Every year, gymnasts around the country are surprised during their tough pre-season training with an early Christmas filled with bunches of Nike and Adidas and Under Armor fun. From spandex and T-shirts and jackets and shoes, it's hard to think of something these athletes don't get.
But before you peruse all the goodies your favorite teams got. We've prepared a song to get you in the mood.
