Missouri Tigers
Missouri is the most recent gymnastics team to affiliate with the SEC, joining in 2012 from the Big 12 conference. Since head coach Shannon Welker took over the program in 2014, the Tigers have grown tremendously. They were the nation's most improved program in 2015, finishing the season ranked 21st, a 20-spot increase from the previous year and the biggest jump out of all the teams in the country. The 2015 team also qualified to its first NCAA regional since 2012, where it scored a 196.100, the second-best regional score in program history. The Tigers were a very young team during the 2016 season with 12 gymnasts out 15 being underclassmen. Nevertheless, their strong freshman class led by Morgan Porter, the program’s first SEC Freshman of the Year, helped the Tigers to an eighth place finish with their highest score ever recorded at an SEC Championship (195.750). Porter went on to compete at the NCAA National Championships as an all arounder and was the first Missouri gymnast to do so since 2012. We can expect the Tigers to keep improving and climbing up the ladder of the conference and national rankings over the next few seasons. Successful former gymnasts include Sarah Shire, Alisha Robinson, Mary Houghton and Julie Dorn.
